Genesee County, MI — If you’ve ever wondered what goes on inside a honeybee hive, For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum in Burton offers a fascinating up-close look.
For-Mar, part of Genesee County Parks, has two observation hives. Its permanent hive was recently re-installed after being a fixture at the visitor’s center for more than 20 years. The hive was originally donated by S&L Honey Farm in honor of Daniel Parker. Visitors can safely watch the bees through covered viewing windows, while a tube through the back wall allows the bees to come and go outdoors.
For-Mar also has a traveling observation hive, donated in memory of Donald Gancsas. This hive can be taken to schools, community events, senior centers and other locations, giving people the chance to safely see honeybees at work and learn more about their important role as pollinators.
The preserve also maintains four traditional hives in its outdoor apiary (bee yard), where honeybee programs are offered for all ages. Beekeeper Krista Ketterer helps maintain the hives and uses them to educate visitors about bees, pollination and the incredible work happening inside every colony.
