Genesee County, MI — Genesee County Parks is excited to welcome “The Lone Wolverine” to For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum for a special exhibit at the Visitor Center from May 12 through July 6, 2026.

Made possible through a partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Burton Area Historical Society, this unique exhibit gives visitors a rare opportunity to learn about one of Michigan’s most fascinating wildlife stories.

Although Michigan is famously known as “The Wolverine State,” wild wolverines are almost never seen here. In fact, the animal featured in this exhibit was Michigan’s only known wild wolverine in modern times. First spotted in 2004 in Michigan’s Thumb region, the female wolverine captured the attention of wildlife officials, researchers and residents across the state. She lived in the wild for several years before being found dead in 2010 near the Minden City State Game Area.

Visitors can see the exhibit at For-Mar’s Visitor Center daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and learn more about the history, science, and mystery surrounding Michigan’s lone wolverine.

Community members are also invited to attend “The Lone Wolverine” presentation on Friday, May 22, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum, 2142 N. Genesee Road in Burton.

Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, a history buff, or simply curious about one of Michigan’s rarest natural stories, this exhibit is a great opportunity to experience a remarkable piece of Michigan history right here in Genesee County.
