Genesee County is proud to honor, serve and hire Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces:
- Genesee County Department of Veterans Services (GCDVS) is led by
Lieutenant Colonel Derrick Britton, who recently retired from the Michigan Air
National Guard. - In 2024, the Genesee County Board of Commissioners invested $75,000 in the
Sacred Heart Veteran Village in Flint, a Comprehensive Transitional Housing
Program for Veterans overseen by the Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and
Genesee Counties. - Genesee County is proud to have achieved the status of Veteran-Friendly
Employer from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA). - GCDVS is the driving force behind the annual Veterans Resource Rally, one of
the largest Veteran engagement events in the region. We connect hundreds
of active military members, Veterans and their families with local, state and
federal resources. This year’s event was held in Flushing. - In 2024, the Board of Commissioners invested $100,000 in a microgrant
program for local nonprofit organizations or municipalities to enhance
activities and programming that address Veterans’ needs and recognize their
service. - In 2024, two members of the GCDVS staff, Lauren Thompson and Beth Smith
were honored for their service to Veterans by the Great Lakes National
Cemetery and the Michigan Air National Guard, respectively. - In 2024, the Board of Commissioners invested $160,000 to fund Vets to
Wellness, a personalized transportation service for Veterans and their spouses.
Genesee County was an early adopter of the Operation Green Light for
Veterans Initiative to raise awareness around the unique challenges faced by
many veterans and to connect them to available resources. - The 2024 MVAA Michigan Veteran of the Year, Mike “Flagman” Bowen of
Flushing, was nominated by GCDVS.
