The Genesee County Department of Senior Services has wrapped up another successful season of Senior Shred Day events, helping local seniors safely dispose of thousands of pounds of sensitive documents while supporting responsible recycling.

Three events were held throughout 2026 at Mundy Miracle Commons, Hyatt Elementary and Carman Ainsworth Senior Center. Together, residents brought in an impressive 27,450 pounds of paper for secure, on-site destruction.

That amount of recycled paper is estimated to have saved 239 trees.

The season began May 7 at Mundy Miracle Commons, where 12,150 pounds of paper were collected, followed by another 3,300 pounds at Hyatt Elementary on June 24. The final event of the year, held September 24 at Carman Ainsworth Senior Center, collected 12,000 pounds.

Senior Shred Days provide residents with a convenient way to securely destroy documents containing personal or confidential information. Materials are shredded on site by Shred Experts, giving participants added peace of mind while also keeping large quantities of paper out of the waste stream.

The strong participation throughout the season once again demonstrated the value of bringing practical services directly into the community.

Genesee County Senior Services thanks everyone who participated in this year’s events, along with the host locations and partners like GCSO and the Shred Experts who helped make another successful Senior Shred Day season possible.
