On Friday, The Detroit News published a feature story on something that has been brewing in Flint and Genesee County for many years: the creation of the county’s first state park.

The feature does a great job outlining how the vision for the park took shape and how the park will become a public asset that will transform the landscape of downtown Flint for the benefit of all residents. Genesee County Parks will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the park.

Work on the site is well underway, and we will provide updates throughout the process.

While the park is already open, construction continues on the first phase of improvements, which is focused on improvements at Riverbank Park. That includes renovations to the amphitheater block and the development of the market stall block. 

The amphitheater block will provide new access to the Flint River while creating an updated gathering space for residents and visitors. The project includes a new kayak and canoe launch, upgraded lighting, and improved sightlines.

The Market Stall Block will have upgraded pathways with universal access, upgraded lighting, improved grassy areas for picnicking, fishing access, seating areas, and a rain garden area to help with water control.
