Genesee County, MI — Navigating the legal system or obtaining important public records can feel overwhelming. Genesee County’s Legal Resource Center is working to make those services easier to access by connecting residents with attorneys, court representatives and vital-records staff in one convenient location.

Located at 900 S. Saginaw St., Room 204, inside the 7^th Circuit Courthouse in downtown Flint, the Legal Resource Center offers several free programs to help residents better understand their rights, responsibilities, and available resources.

Friend of the Court Assistance Every Monday

Representatives from the Genesee County Friend of the Court are available at the Legal Resource Center every Monday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Residents can receive assistance with matters involving custody, parenting time, and child support orders. Representatives can also help residents find parenting resources, make payments, address outstanding warrants and ask questions about payment plans or past-due child support.

Friend of the Court services are available on a walk-in basis.

Free Social Security and Disability Legal Advice

An attorney is available every Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. to provide free, brief legal advice regarding Social Security and disability issues.

These sessions are part of the Legal Resource Center’s “Ask the Lawyer” program. Appointments can be made by stopping in at the Legal Resource Center.

Family Law Assistance on August 4

Residents seeking guidance on family law matters can meet with an attorney on Tuesday, August 4, from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

The attorney can provide free, brief legal advice regarding divorce, custody, parenting time, and other domestic relations issues.

Appointments can be scheduled by visiting the Legal Resource Center.

Probate Assistance Every Other Tuesday

Free legal advice for probate-related matters is available every other Tuesday. The next session will be held on Tuesday, July 21, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Attorneys can provide guidance regarding estates, guardianships, conservatorships and other probate matters. Residents interested in attending should stop by the Legal Resource Center to make an appointment.

Vital Records Available Monthly

The Genesee County Clerk’s Vital Records staff is available at the Legal Resource Center on the first Tuesday of every month.

Residents can receive assistance obtaining:

• Birth records
• Death records
• Marriage records
• Military discharge records

Vital-records assistance is available on a walk-in basis.

A Valuable Resource for Genesee County Residents

The Legal Resource Center provides a welcoming place where residents can find information, understand court processes and connect with professionals who can help them determine their next steps.

In 2025 alone, LRC assisted more than 6,000 Genesee County residents. For many individuals and families, the center is a first step toward finding answers, resolving legal issues, and moving forward with confidence. Its work reflects a simple but powerful idea: every resident should have a place to turn for guidance, regardless of income, background, or education. Legal Resource Center employees cannot provide legal advice, however the Center offers not only practical support, but also dignity and reassurance during times that can feel overwhelming.

Attorneys participating in the “Ask the Lawyer” sessions provide limited, brief advice and may not be accepting cases or providing direct representation. Services are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Legal Resource Center employees cannot provide legal advice.
