Genesee County, MI — Bishop International Airport is continuing its momentum as one of Genesee County’s most important transportation and economic development assets.

At a press conference held Wednesday at Bishop International Airport in Flint, officials announced that the Bishop International Airport Authority (BIAA) has been awarded a Fiscal Year 2026 Airport Infrastructure Grant from the Federal Aviation Administration totaling nearly $4 million. The funding represents a significant federal investment in the continued modernization and expansion of Flint’s airport infrastructure.

Genesee County Board of Commissioners Chairman Dale K. Weighill offered remarks during the announcement, highlighting the importance of Bishop International Airport to Genesee County, the broader region, and thanking Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet for her advocacy on behalf of the community.

Weighill was joined by McDonald Rivet, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, Bishop CEO Nino Sapone and members of the BIAA Board.

The grant will support the final phase of a critical airfield improvement project designed to enhance airport operations, improve safety, and position Bishop International Airport for future growth.

Specifically, the project will fund the construction of a new 1,200-foot taxilane that will provide airfield access to a non-exclusive hangar development area. This improvement will help create additional opportunities for aviation-related investment and development at the airport.

The project will also include construction of a new 6,000-foot paved service road, giving designated personnel and airport vehicles an alternate route to access operational areas. The service road will improve efficiency and help reduce congestion within the airfield environment.

These improvements are necessary to bring airport infrastructure into conformity with current Federal Aviation Administration standards and represent the final construction phase of a multi-year planning effort.

The investment further strengthens Bishop International Airport’s role as a gateway for commerce, business development, and regional connectivity. With continued federal support through the Airport Infrastructure Grant program, Bishop International Airport is well-positioned to remain competitive, support future aviation growth, and continue serving residents, businesses, and visitors throughout Flint, Genesee County, and beyond.
