On behalf of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and former constituents of the late Congressman and United States Senator Donald W. Riegle Jr.
Senator Riegle’s life and career were defined by his passion for public service. As a native son of Flint, he never forgot where he came from or the people he was elected to serve. Throughout his years in Congress, he was a tireless advocate for families, veterans, and policies that ensured working-class communities, like many in Genesee County, were not left behind.
Senator Riegle was also a fierce and inspiring advocate for democracy, civic life, and human rights all around the world, and played a very special role in bringing freedom to people who fled the former Soviet Union for a better life in the United States. His legacy will live on and continue to prompt people to serve well after his passing.
To show our gratitude for his decades of compassionate service to Michigan and the nation, I am ordering flags on County buildings to be flown at half-staff.
May his memory be a comfort to his loved ones during this difficult time.
