MCC Fine Arts Gallery features the photography of Paul Rozycki

Genesee County, MI –– Mott Community College’s Fine Arts Gallery is proud to present the photography of Paul Rozycki, beginning today. Although best known as a local political analyst and MCC Professor Emeritus, Rozycki is also an accomplished photographer.

“I have been working with photography since I was about 12 years old and have seen photography change from the black and white darkroom to the digital age,” he said. “At times I have made a living with photography and was a photojournalist for a daily newspaper in Illinois, but for the most part, it has been a satisfying means of self-expression. For many years I was a regular exhibitor at the Flint Art Fair and have frequently had photo shows at area galleries.

“For me the use of light has always been the heart and soul of photography. In my photographs I have tried to use light to highlight the shape and form of our world as well as the human condition. I love to use light to record the world around me and explore the visual statements that are inherent in the abstract shapes of all things.”

Rozycki’s day job for many years, beginning in the late 1960s, was teaching. It’s a profession he came to somewhat accidentally. He planned a career as a journalist, having worked for a daily newspaper in Illinois. After completing his undergraduate degree at Northern Illinois University and graduate school at Indiana University, Rozycki taught political science at Ball State University for two years before coming to MCC in 1969. He officially retired in the summer of 2011, but is still involved with college committees and activities.

While at MCC, Rozycki taught a variety of political science courses, as well as courses in Leadership and Service Learning. He served as advisor to the student newspaper, the MCC Post, and as editor of the Education Association newsletter, the Forward

He has also been involved in the political life of Flint and Genesee County. On a regular basis, Rozycki has been the political analyst for ABC-12 and NBC 25. He is a regular columnist for the East Village Magazine in Flint.

Through the years, his interest in photography remained.

“These images are a reflection of my reaction to some of the events and activities in the Flint and Genesee County area within the last year or so,” he said, about the exhibition.  “Several of the images are a direct interpretation of the objects and their shape and color. Others have abstracted that shape and color and removed those objects, just a bit, from reality.”

Rozycki’s work will be on display in MCC’s Fine Arts Gallery from April 7-25. An Art Talk is scheduled on April 16 at 11 a.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery located in the Visual Arts and Design Center on the Flint campus.

Gallery Hours are 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.  Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Art and Design office at 810-762-0443.
