When people think of county government, they may first think of formal meetings, budgets, or local ordinances. But National County Government Month is a reminder that county government is actually more about delivering essential services that make a positive impact on residents every day.

In Genesee County, we are proud to stand beside the men and women who served our country with honor. The Genesee County Department of Veterans Services (GCDVS) exists to strengthen the lives of veterans and their families through compassionate service, supportive resources, and professional advocacy, helping connect them with benefits, emergency assistance, and other critical services.

One example is Vets to Wellness, a partnership with the Mass Transportation Authority that helps remove transportation barriers for veterans and their spouses. Through this program, eligible participants can receive three rides per month for wellness-related destinations, helping them get where they need to go for care and support. One of those rides can also be used for travel out of the county to the VA, making the program an important link to health and wellness services.

GCDVS also helps veterans access emergency financial help through the Soldiers Relief Commission. The Soldiers Relief Commission assists honorably discharged veterans who have at least one day of active duty. With support from the Veterans Services office, applicants can complete the required paperwork and gather needed documents for submission. Applications are reviewed through an approval process, giving eligible veterans a path to assistance when urgent needs arise.

The office also assists with the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund Grant, a similar program administered through the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, which provides another potential source of support for veterans facing hardship. Our incredible staff helps veterans understand both options and navigate the application process.

We are proud of the GCDVS staff for their work connecting veterans and their families to benefits and services that can transform lives.
