During National County Government Month, Genesee County is proud to highlight programs and services that make a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents.

One of those vital resources is the Legal Resource Center (LRC), located at the 7th Circuit Courthouse in downtown Flint, which helps people navigate some of life’s most difficult and important moments. By providing free legal information, assistance with forms, and connections to trusted community partners, the Legal Resource Center helps make the court system more accessible and approachable.

In 2025 alone, LRC assisted more than 6,000 Genesee County residents. For many individuals and families, the center is a first step toward finding answers, resolving legal issues, and moving forward with confidence. Its work reflects a simple but powerful idea: every resident should have a place to turn for guidance, regardless of income, background, or education. The center offers not only practical support, but also dignity and reassurance during times that can feel overwhelming.

The Legal Resource Center is also notable for its scale and reach. It is the largest self-help center of its kind in Michigan by square footage, making it a true hub for information and support. That impact is strengthened through partnerships with a wide range of local organizations, including the YWCA, Friend of the Court, Genesee County Department of Senior Services, and Legal Services of Eastern Michigan. Together, these collaborations help connect residents with the services and resources they need in one welcoming, supportive environment.

“Legal issues can be overwhelming, especially for residents who may not know where to turn or who cannot easily access the resources they need,” said Rachel Hawrylo, Director of the Legal Resource Center. “We are here to make sure people in Genesee County have a place to find reliable information, practical support, and connections to services that they might not even know exist.”

Last fall, More than 150 staff and community members attended the LRC’s grand reopening, celebrating a spectacular, fully renovated space on the second floor of the courthouse.

Genesee County’s Legal Resource Center is a strong example of county government at its best: practical, people-centered, and committed to serving the public good.
