Grand Blanc, MI — The Flint City Bucks, one of the winningest amateur soccer clubs in the country, took to the field on Thursday night for a U.S. Open Cup match against Forward Madison FC at Don Batchelor Field in Grand Blanc. It was a rare opportunity to see the Bucks in action for a late winter tilt against a professional side from USL League One.

A huge crowd was in attendance, thanks, in part, to a spectacular night of weather for March in Michigan.

The weather, as it turned out, was only the second-best part of the evening for soccer fans in Genesee County. The Bucks absolutely dominated Forward Madison defensively, en route to a 2-0 victory. The win marks the 11th time the Bucks have advanced to at least the second round of the U.S. Open Cup since 1996.

Here’s how U.S. Soccer described the match:

Fabled giant-slayers Flint City Bucks made a splash in their first Open Cup match since 2018, earning an improbable 11th victory against a professional opponent in the competition. The USL League Two side bested USL League One professionals Forward Madison FC in the pair’s first meeting thanks to a Madison own goal early on and a second-half strike from Jordy Lopez off the bench.

The Bucks now advance to the next round with a date and opponent to be determined.
