Genesee County is home to thousands of veterans and military families, and the Genesee County Department of Veterans Services (GCDVS) works year-round to make sure they receive the benefits, support, and respect they have earned. You can see evidence of the incredible work of GCDVS in the steady growth of veteran-focused resources flowing into Genesee County, benefiting the men and women who have served our nation.
In Fiscal Year 2024, total direct VA expenditures in Genesee County reached $149,699,237, with an additional $105,215,201 in indirect VA expenditures. These totals reflect the broad scope of services GCDVS helps veterans and their families access.
“Connecting veterans in our community to benefits is central to our mission,” said GCDVS Director Derrick Britton, who retired from the Michigan Air National Guard in 2024. “Throughout Genesee County, our goal each year is to make a positive impact on our residents. And for us, it’s not just about benefits for veterans, but also about how we can ensure our community reaps the benefits of working alongside veterans in every aspect of life.
Direct expenditures provide money directly to veterans and their families through benefits such as compensation, pensions, and survivor programs, while indirect expenditures fund longer-term supports, including education, healthcare, housing adaptations, and other services that promote stability and quality of life.
Beyond federal benefits, local support is crucial for the health and well-being of our veterans in our community. The Genesee County Soldiers Relief Commission and the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund Committee approved more than $85,000 in assistance for Genesee County veterans in need in the last year. These funds help to ensure that veterans facing hardship are not left behind.
“We are fully committed to serving the public good by investing in those who have served our country so well,” said Delrico J. Loyd, Chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. “We are proud of this work and grateful for the continued support of residents across Genesee County.”
