Genesee County, MI — Across the nation, more than 40 million Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to put food on the table. Here in Genesee County, that includes more than 80,000 of our neighbors—families, children, seniors, and veterans who depend on this essential support. That’s roughly 20 percent of our population, making Genesee County one of the most impacted areas in Michigan in the event of a prolonged lapse in food assistance due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Thankfully, our community is known for stepping up in times of need. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and its partner organizations have served as a lifeline for decades, ensuring that no one in our region goes hungry.

Genesee County is also on the front lines of community service through our Senior Services Department, Veterans Services, and GCCARD, meeting a wide range of needs, including food distribution. During this uncertain time, their work — and the work of countless faith-based nonprofits, volunteers, and service organizations— will be more critical than ever. We owe them our gratitude and support as they prepare to fill the gap and prevent a potential food crisis from developing here at home.
