Genesee County, MI — The Genesee County Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission, at its most recent meeting, celebrated Indian Heritage Month by honoring the vibrant traditions, stories, and contributions of the Indian community in Genesee County and beyond.
The Board of Commissioners passed a resolution in September recognizing October as Indian Heritage Month for 2025.
“These resolutions are significant because they reinforce our commitment in Genesee County to see and value our residents, their cultures, and their histories,” said Elizabeth Jordan, Chair of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission. “In partnering with community groups, we forge connections that help us celebrate our common humanity while honoring our unique paths and experiences. “
As part of the celebration, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission welcomed Dr. Neelam Puri, Artistic Director of Neelam’s Bollywood Dance Academy in Goodrich, who shared insights into Diwali, the Festival of Lights—one of the most cherished celebrations in Hindu culture.
The promotion of cultural learning is part of the Commission’s ongoing commitment to highlight the many cultures that make Genesee County a vibrant, inclusive community.
“Cultural learning deepens understanding, allowing the Commission to serve our community with greater empathy, respect, and unity,” said Commissioner Anupa Shantaram. “It fosters greater understanding and a deeper appreciation of the diverse voices we serve.”
For more than 40 years, Dr. Puri has been teaching, performing, and choreographing the dances of India, enriching the cultural life of Michigan and Genesee County. Through her academy, she has helped empower women, promote appreciation of diverse cultures, and share the beauty and rhythm of Indian traditions with audiences across the state.
The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission serves as an advisory commission to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. The Commission is comprised of members of the Board of Commissioners, county employees and community members. The goals of the commission are to increase awareness of social injustice and its effects, to improve fair and equal treatment for all, to enhance the county’s reputation as being welcoming to all, and to equip and empower people to resolve social justice issues by focusing on:
- Health equity
- The Board’s policies and budget priorities
- The hiring, training, diversification, and projects related to county employees
- Public safety
- Procurement
The Commission meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm at the Genesee County Administration Building, 324 S. Saginaw Street in downtown Flint.
