Genesee County, MI — For residents who have lived in Genesee County all their lives, it can be easy to overlook some of the things that make our place in Michigan unique.

One of those things is our access to outdoor recreation opportunities. In Genesee County, we say you can “get away, right away” because you don’t have to drive three hours to northern Michigan to get a taste of it right here at home.

Here’s one great example: The state of Michigan has four National Water Trails as designated by the National Parks Service, and two of the four can be accessed right here in Genesee County — The Flint River National Water Trail and the Shiawassee River National Water Trail.

These nationally recognized waterways provide a unique way to explore our county’s natural beauty while engaging in healthy outdoor recreation. And, here’s the best part: They are only a short drive no matter where you live in Genesee County.

The Flint River National Water Trail spans 72 miles and flows right through the heart of Genesee County, through downtown Flint (the future home of our first state park), and northwest toward Flushing and Montrose. It has 25 access points across Genesee and Lapeer counties.

The Flint River Watershed Coalition (FRWC) enhances the experience on the Flint River and safeguards its future as a public asset. In 2024, the FRWC became part of the Genesee County Parks & Recreation Commission to maintain and ultimately expand its programs aimed at education and environmental quality.

The Shiawassee River National Water Trail, well known to residents in southern Genesee County, stretches 88 miles across Mid Michigan. It delivers a diverse paddling experience through natural areas and into beautiful cities like Fenton and Linden.

And even bigger things are coming soon!

Two kayak and canoe launches will be built on opposite sides of the Millpond Park dam in downtown Fenton as part of a $1.5 million park improvement project. One of the most beautiful city parks in Genesee County will be even more amazing for years to come.

The Hogan Road Kayak Launch project, funded by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network in partnership with the Keepers of the Shiawassee, is also coming soon. The site, which is being transferred to Fenton Township by Genesee County, will provide a more accessible and environmentally friendly entry into the river.

Together, these public assets are just a couple more reasons to consider Genesee County a premier destination for outdoor recreation.

And don’t forget, Genesee County Parks also offers kayak rentals at the Bluegill Boat Launch. Click here for more information.
