The Genesee County Board of Commissioners has made an intentional effort to ensure that our priorities align with our organization’s values. These priorities and the values embedded in them can be seen throughout our organization, in the programs and services we offer our residents, and in our approach to ensuring our employees feel valued and empowered.
One of our priorities is promoting an inclusive, collaborative culture in Genesee County for the benefit of all residents. To achieve this, we aspire to enhance the county’s role as a convener among diverse groups, fostering community growth. We emphasize the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, while also advocating for transparency within the community.
So, what does this priority look like in action? It is visible at every level of our organization:
- We see it daily at Genesee County Animal Control, which focuses resources on outreach to the community to promote pet adoptions and health and wellness opportunities for residents with pets.
- We see it in our Equalization Department, which has invested in the CoStar service to facilitate objective and unbiased property valuations.
- We see it in Facilities and Operations, which has taken on the responsibility of facilitating operations in all county buildings.
- We see it in the diligence and attention to detail of our entire Fiscal Services team, which received no audit findings for the third consecutive year. Prior to this streak, the County hadn’t had a single year without findings since 2006.
- We see it in our Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD) with the Senior Nutrition program that ensures our senior residents have access to the basic nutritional needs of everyday life.
- We see it in our Human Resources Department, which offers the Tri-Share Program, which shares the burden of employee childcare costs in three ways.
- We also see it in the work of our HR Department with Genesee County’s Department of Veteran Services (GCDVS) to plan ways to build the representation of veterans, actively serving individuals, and military spouses within the county’s diverse workforce. To that end, Genesee County achieved the distinction of a Veteran-Friendly Employer in 2024.
- We see it in Information Technology, which has invested in an Intranet system (GenHub) that serves as an employee portal with a comprehensive list of resources and information about our organization.
- We see it in our incredible Genesee County Parks, soon to be the caretaker of the county’s first state park, consisting of 230 acres that stretch approximately 3 miles east to west and more than 1.5 miles north to south from downtown Flint. This project required collaboration between Genesee County, The City of Flint, The Mott Foundation and the State of Michigan.
- We see it in our Veterans Services Department, which offers transportation services and in-person guidance for veterans navigating the often intimidating process of securing VA benefits.
- We see it in our Senior Services Department, which offers seniors a ride to and from their homes to their medical appointments with liaison support at and during appointments.
- We see it in our Aerial Imagery Program that has been managed by the Geographic Information Systems Department (GIS) since 2006. This program provides access to all governments and citizens within the county. It illustrates the value of collaboration offering all local governments access to GIS resources with the added benefit of cost-sharing.
This is who we are and why we exist as an organization. It is our common purpose: To make a positive impact on Genesee County.
April is National County Government Month
During this month, we will focus attention on the variety of services provided to residents as a reminder of our critical role in promoting healthy, safe, and livable communities across our community. With that in mind, we are first and foremost grateful for every member of our team and their role in providing the programs and services that help make Genesee County a great place to live and work. #NCGM #GeneseeCountyServes
