The Genesee County Board of Commissioners has made an intentional effort to ensure that our priorities align with our organization’s values. These priorities and the values embedded in them can be seen throughout our organization, in the programs and services we offer our residents, and in our approach to ensuring our employees feel valued and empowered.

One of our priorities is the long-term financial stability of Genesee County for the benefit of all residents. To achieve this, it is essential to continue addressing past, current and future costs with a comprehensive plan that balances the value of individuals with the need for stewardship.

Embracing a lean management philosophy has helped streamline operations and enhance efficiency across the County. Additionally, accountability is crucial; therefore, it is essential to ensure that every department consistently follows all policies with transparency.

Lastly, adopting a data-driven approach to decision-making will enable the county to make informed choices that align with our values, priorities and the needs of our residents.

What does this priority look like in action? This priority is visible at every level of our organization:

  • We see it in our Equalization Department, which has invested in the CoStar service to facilitate objective and unbiased property valuations.
  • We see it in Facilities and Operations, which has taken on the responsibility of facilitating operations in all county buildings and has worked alongside the Board of Commissioners to consolidate county-owned facilities to achieve long-term operational cost savings for residents.
  • We see it in Information Technology (IT), which has led an effort, alongside Commissioner Dr. Beverly Brown, to bring high-speed, high-quality, and affordable Internet to every corner of Genesee County through the NextGenesee Initiative. This initiative, once fully realized, will have a tremendous positive impact on economic and community development in Genesee County. The Board of Commissioners also approved the recommendation of IT to invest in Ring Central for state-of-the-art telephone services. The new, streamlined service will save county taxpayers $1 million over five years.
  • We see it in our Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD) with the Water Payment Assistance initiative, which ensure residents who need help with water bills get it and that our water system continues to receive the funds it needs to maintain service for all residents.
  • We see it in our Fiscal Services Department (see photo below), which has invested in new risk management strategies while safeguarding trusts and investments for the betterment of the organization and, ultimately, our residents. We also see this priority in the diligence and attention to detail of our entire financial team, which received no audit findings for the third consecutive year. Prior to this streak, the County hadn’t had a single year without findings since 2006.

This is who we are and why we exist as an organization. It is our common purpose: To make a positive impact on Genesee County.

April is National County Government Month

During this month, we will focus attention on the variety of services provided to residents as a reminder of our critical role in promoting healthy, safe, and livable communities across our community. With that in mind, we are first and foremost grateful for every member of our team and their role in providing the programs and services that help make Genesee County a great place to live and work. #NCGM #GeneseeCountyServes
