Masterpieces from the nation’s art collection to travel to Flint community in April 2025 as part of commemorations for the United States’ 250th anniversary
Genesee County, MI — The Flint Institute of Arts Museum + Art School is excited to announce its partnership with the National Gallery of Art for its “Across the Nation” program, which brings key works of art to regional museums across the United States in 2025 and 2026.
As part of the program, the FIA will receive three (3) works on loan, which will be on view beginning Wednesday, April 9, 2025 through April 2027. The loaned works include paintings from Renaissance artists Sandro Botticelli and Hans Memling, and a painting by 20th-century Pop artist Andy Warhol. These artworks will both complement and build on the FIA’s permanent collection.
The Memling and Botticelli paintings will be on view in the Summerfield Gallery alongside works from the FIA’s permanent Renaissance and Baroque collection. The painting by Warhol will be the cornerstone of a micro-exhibit titled “Andy Warhol and the Cult of Fame” on display in the Charles Stewart Mott Gallery wing.
“The FIA is extremely honored to be part of the National Gallery of Art’s program to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States.” says FIA Executive Director Tracee Glab. “What better way to express our nation’s ideals of freedom than by sharing a variety of artistic expressions across the country. These artworks, on view alongside works from the FIA’s collection, help us tell a more complete story of the history of art, from the Renaissance in Europe to the 20th century in America.”
“Across the Nation is the manifestation of the National Gallery’s vision as the nation’s art museum. We are so thrilled to bring some of the most beloved works from the nation’s collection directly into communities across the country as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of America,” said Kaywin Feldman, director of the National Gallery of Art.
The National Gallery of Art worked with all partner institutions—selected to broaden access to the national collection in as many regions of the United States as possible—to curate a unique selection of artworks for each “Across the Nation” presentation. The selections introduce new artists and perspectives to these communities while complementing each Museum’s own collections and programming.
Through this initiative, works of art by renowned artists from the National Gallery’s collection will be on loan at 10 partner museums in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Utah, and Washington, creating unprecedented accessibility to the nation’s masterworks by placing them directly in communities across the country. “Across the Nation” is part of the National Gallery’s programming commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, taking place in 2026, which also includes a series of special installations and exhibitions, on-site programs, and digital content.
