The Genesee County Board of Commissioners has made an intentional effort to ensure that our priorities align with our organization’s values. These priorities and the values embedded in them can be seen throughout our organization, in the programs and services we offer our residents, and in our approach to ensuring our employees feel valued and empowered.

One of our priorities is the promotion of Healthy, Safe, and Livable Communities. We do this by communicating available resources to our residents; we do this by promoting environmental stewardship for the betterment of all, now and in the future; and we do this by promoting public health and public safety to create an environment in which our residents can live their best lives.
What does this priority look like in action? This priority is visible at every level of our organization:
- We see it in our Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD) with the Senior Nutrition programs and Water Payment Assistance, initiatives that ensure residents have access to the basic needs of everyday life.
- We see it daily at Genesee County Animal Control, which focuses its resources on pet adoptions, wellness, and hosting free and low-cost shot clinics.
- We see it embedded in nearly every initiative of our Metropolitan Planning Commission, including initiatives aimed at spurring growth in affordable housing, support for urgent home repairs, and a focus on sustainability by offering free recycling of hazardous household materials to residents.
- We see it in Information Technology, which has led an effort, alongside Commissioner Dr. Beverly Brown, to bring high-speed, high-quality, and affordable Internet to every corner of Genesee County through the NextGenesee Initiative.
- We see it in our amazing Health Department, which offers a variety of clinic services for residents – most services are available regardless of income and insurance coverage.
- We see it in our incredible Genesee County Parks, soon to be the caretaker of the county’s first state park, consisting of 230 acres that stretch approximately 3 miles east to west and more than 1.5 miles north to south from downtown Flint.
- We see it in our Human Resources Department, which offers the Tri-Share Program, which shares the burden of employee childcare costs in three ways.
- We see it in our Senior Services Department, which offers seniors a ride to and from their homes to their medical appointments with liaison support at and during appointments.
- We see it in our Veterans Services Department, which offers individual and group therapy for veterans with PTSD, transportation services, and in-person guidance for veterans navigating the often intimidating process of securing VA benefits.

As you can see, Genesee County’s programs and services are designed to reflect and uphold our values and priorities — and this is only a tiny fraction of the programs and services we provide.
By focusing our time, energy, and resources on our priorities, we can continue to meet the unique needs of our community, promoting sustainable growth and development that will benefit our residents now and in the future.
This is who we are and why we exist as an organization. It is our common purpose: To make a positive impact on Genesee County.
April is National County Government Month.
During this month, we will focus attention on the variety of services provided to residents as a reminder of our critical role in promoting healthy, safe, and livable communities across our community. With that in mind, we are first and foremost grateful for every member of our team and their role in providing the programs and services that help make Genesee County a great place to live and work. #NCGM #GeneseeCountyServes
