This week, we go way back in time for a spectacular photo of Downtown Flint. When this photo was taken, Genesee County had only been in existence as a county for around 50 years.

From the Genesee County Historical Society:

This is one of the earlier Saginaw Street shots we’ve seen – possibly dating to the 1880s. The shot was taken looking north from in front of where Blackstone’s Smokehouse stands today. On the left the mural Foote Photographs is the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, and the hexagonal tower on the bank to the right is now the Mott Foundation Building. While there are a few carriages visible, there are far more farm wagons, including some piled high with hay. Farmers would bring hay and other crops to town on Saturdays, and customers could purchase directly from them.

The mission of the Genesee County Historical Society is to preserve, promote, and document the history of Genesee County. To support this mission, become a member today!
