GENESEE COUNTY, MI – In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the Genesee County Board of Commissioner announced plans to illuminate county buildings in green from November 4-11 as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort uniting counties to support military veterans.

The initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACO), raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families. In 2023, over 300 counties participated in Operation Green Light.

“Genesee County’s support of Operation Green Light is a visible symbol of our unwavering support and appreciation to those who have served,” said James Avery, Chair of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. “This initiative is a reminder to our entire community that the sacrifices of veterans should be remembered not just on Veterans Day, but every day.”

The Board of Commissioners is encouraging organizations, businesses and individuals across Genesee County to light up buildings, bridges, and other recognizable landmarks in green light. Residents can participate by simply changing one light bulb inside or outside their home to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported, and we open up conversation about the needs of veterans and the services that support veteran communities.

“Operation Green Light is a great way to raise awareness and understanding about the often unseen challenges faced by our veterans everyday,” said Derrick Britton, Director of Genesee County Veterans Services. “When we come together with one voice, we can provide hope, encouragement and, most importantly, resources to our veterans.”
