Genesee County, MI — The Genesee County Board of Commissioners and longtime County Treasurer Deb Cherry have teamed up to take down another longstanding eyesore in west Flint.
Just one day after ABC 12 gave an update on the future of the formerly blighted McDonald Dairy site comes a story of more progress by way of demolition. The infamous Ballenger Manor, at the corner of Ballenger Highway and Westcombe Avenue, will finally meet its long-overdue fate.
With a unanimous vote of the Board at its regular meeting on Wednesday night, the County purchased the property using delinquent tax funds. Once the demolition is complete and the property cleared, it will be sold to recoup the associated costs.
Genesee County Treasurer Deb Cherry said the site, located south of McLaren-Flint, was foreclosed on a couple of months ago. But, she explained the process took many years to get to that point.
The first task was trying to find the property’s owner, and that process started over five years ago.
“There were two owners who were fighting about who actually owned it,” said Cherry. “And because it was in court, we couldn’t foreclose. So, it was sitting out there for, I want to say, 5 years in bad condition,” she explained.
Genesee County and the Board of Commissioners are proud of the work that is happening every day to promote healthy, safe and livable communities across the County.
