Genesee County, MI — At Wednesday evening’s Regular Meeting of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, the Board reaffirmed its commitment ensuring residents, young and young-at-heart, have the support they need to thrive in our community.

The Board approved numerous agreements, grant awards and requests totaling more than $4 million for vital programs for the children of Genesee County, including Head Start, Early Head Start and the Healthy Start Initiative.

“These programs provide a firm foundation from which our youngest residents can achieve great things,” said James Avery, Chair of the Board of Commissioners. “We know that early childhood education is vital to the future of our community, and we’re grateful that these services will continue to be available to young families in Genesee County.”

Alongside investments in children and young families, the Board also approved agreements totaling nearly $8.8 million for the health, safety and wellness of senior citizens. The investments include funds for programs and services at all 16 senior centers in Genesee County and additional funds for a whole host of critical services that our seniors utilize every day.

Investments in Senior Citizens: Homemaking services, in-home personal care, adult daycare, legal services including for guardianship and conservatorship, impairment services, medical transportation, respite services, ramp construction, lawn care and snow maintenance, audit services and elder abuse/exploitation prevention.

“Our senior residents have contributed so much to our county, state and country,” Avery said. “We want to ensure they have the support they need so that they know they are valued, and that they can continue to play a key role in making Genesee County a great place to live and work.”
