Genesee County, MI — The Genesee County Department of Veterans Services will begin accepting applications for its Veterans Microgrant Program on July 1. This is a competitive program that offers a one-time grant to local nonprofit organizations or municipalities to enhance activities and programming that address Veterans’ needs and recognize their service.

Grant applications will be available online via Genesee County’s Veterans Services and will be accepted on a rolling basis while funds are available.

“We’re incredibly proud to be able to support local organizations meeting critical needs of Veterans,” said James Avery, Chair of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. “One of our goals as a board is to cultivate growth in our community by supporting inclusive and collaborative initiatives like this one. And there are many more to come.”

A total of 10 grant awards of up to $10,000 for non-profit [501(c)(19)/501(c)(3)] organizations or municipalities can be used to meet needs including equipment, resources, or other one-time expenses to help enhance program offerings, as well as to improve accessibility for Veterans.

Genesee County Department of Veteran’s Services budget has included a total of $100,000 for this one-time grant.

“I’m grateful that we can assist our local Veteran-serving organizations through this microgrant program,” said Derrick Britton, Genesee County Veterans Services Director. “These grants will help the local organizations in our community doing vital work to serve our Veterans every day.”

“We want to ensure our Veterans are being cared for in a manner worthy of their service to our country.”

Organizations that currently offer specific programs to and for the benefit of Veterans of the United States Armed Forces in Genesee County are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to entities that do not already contract with Genesee County to provide services to veterans. Organizations or municipalities which received funds from Genesee County for Veterans are not eligible to apply.

Examples of possible funding awards include:

  • Enhancement, expansion of a program or service currently offered to Veterans;
  • New programming for veterans provided by an agency that already provides services to Veterans;
  • Purchase plaques, banners or monuments to honor Veterans;
  • Expenses associated with an event to honor Veterans; and
  • General capital infrastructure to facilities, including physical structures (roof, windows, doors, etc.), HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security, furniture, fixtures and equipment; the structure’s primary purpose must be for Veterans’ services.

Only one application per organization will be accepted. Funding should be utilized within one year of award.
