Commissioner Shaun Shumaker was elected to serve the residents of the 6th District as County Commissioner in 2018. He grew up attending Swartz Creek Community Schools, where he graduated in 1989. He spent most of his early years working at his family’s small business, Shumaker’s Sporting Goods, which he is proud to say has been in business for more than 75 years. While working there, he learned to appreciate the value of a dollar through hard work. It was also the experience that fostered his love of working with the public.
After high school, Shaun attended Genesee County’ own Mott Community College, and later went on to graduate from Northwood University, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. After graduation, Shaun spent many years putting his training to use and finding success within the automotive industry.
Shaun and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for over 15 years. They currently reside in Fenton Township with their three sons, Reid, Sam and Ben. Shaun was taught the importance of giving back to your community from an early age by his mother, Diana. He watched and helped her for over 30 years as she dedicated her time to fundraising and organizing events for Whaley Children’s Center. The time he spent doing this, helped him realize his passion for working with and mentoring children. His drive to help others succeed resulted in his taking up coaching. He has coached kids in everything from Youth Sports at his children’s school to coaching the high school Ski Team at Flint Powers Catholic. Through these experiences it became even more important to Shaun that he do more to serve his community.
