Dr. Beverly Brown was appointed to a two-year term to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners during a special meeting on January 27, 2023. During her 38 years in Genesee County, she has lived or worked in the City of Flint, Flint Township, Burton, Mundy Township and Grand Blanc Township.
Dr. Brown brings to the Commission numerous transferable skills and knowledge from both the public and private sectors. She was Vice President of Community Reinvestment at Detroit and Northern Savings Bank in downtown Flint. As President of the Urban Bankers Forum (UBF) of Flint between 1991-1993, she effectively partnered with several organizations earning UBF a Michigan Community Service Award from then Governor John Engler. Dr. Brown was recognized as Banker of the Year twice and served as secretary for the National Association of Urban Bankers.
Following a successful career in banking, she transitioned to education and worked as the School and Business Liaison at the Genesee Area Skill Center (now known as the Genesee Career Institute). In this role, Dr. Brown cultivated numerous business relationships to help fuel career programming at the school. Regular meetings with area superintendents and robust recruitment efforts yielded five consecutive years of increasing enrollment during her administration.
Her passion for developing youth led her to serve as President of the Fair Winds Girl Scout Council between 2003-2006 where she provided leadership for more than 10,000 girls and 4,000 volunteers among four counties. She was also President of the Flint Women’s Forum and is a Golden Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
A product of Detroit Public Schools, Commissioner Brown earned her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and her master’s from Central Michigan University. In 2011, she completed her doctorate in Educational Leadership at Oakland University. Her dissertation topic investigated Lean Management (or continuous improvement) in K-12 schools. She applied her advanced knowledge to new roles at Lansing Community College and later, at the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) where she earned two Good Government awards for her Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programming. In 2019, she also earned the Unsung Hero Award from the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity (NAPE). Her primary work at MDE involved school reform and oversight of all Early Middle Colleges in Michigan. Dr. Brown’s career in education culminated at Oakland Community College upon her retirement in June, 2021 from her role as Director of Secondary Partnerships.
Today, Commissioner Brown is proud to serve residents of Genesee County’s 4th District to help foster economic development, equity and a better quality of life. Commissioner Brown and her husband Willie have been married for over 30 years. They currently live in the City of Flint and are active members at Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church.
