Genesee County, MI – In line with our commitment to community growth and equity, we are excited about a unique opportunity to enhance internet access across Genesee County – the Merit BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment) Mapping Challenge.
In 2024, reliable, high-speed internet is vital to healthy, safe and livable communities. It is essential not just for daily communication, but also for education, healthcare, employment and emergency services.
“We know there are areas within Genesee County that remain unserved or underserved,” said Mike Dawisha, Genesee County’s Chief Information Officer and Chair of the Broadband Task Force. “This lack of access creates a digital divide that we are committed to bridging. The BEAD Challenge is a first step toward our goal of high-speed internet access for all residents of Genesee County.”
By participating in this initiative, residents can provide invaluable information to ensure Genesee County is eligible to receive grant funding as we move forward toward this ambitious goal.
As many residents know from experience, there is often a difference between what internet service providers claim and the actual level of service end users experience. That’s where the BEAD Challenge comes in. Using the challenge process, residents can demonstrate their lack of reliable access (or any access) to high-speed Internet.
“This is part of the process that will put us in a position to receive a major investment in connectivity for Genesee County,” Dawisha said. “We’ve seen the impact of universal broadband access in communities across the country, and we want that for Genesee County. It can unlock the potential of our people, creating new opportunities for growth and sustainability.”
Here’s how you can participate:
- Visit the Merit BEAD Mapping Challenge website.
- Follow the instructions to report on the quality of your current internet service prior to April 23, 2024.
- Encourage your neighbors to do the same by sharing this information online.
Dr. Beverly Brown, District 4 Commissioner and member of the Broadband Task Force, is among the strongest voices in support of universal internet access.
“I believe that through a unified vision and collective effort, we can make universal broadband internet access a reality for every household and business in Genesee County,” she said. “This is within our reach.”
